Bangkok based semiconductor packaging company Vigilant Technology recently spun-off its solid-state lighting activities into a new company named Vigilant Manufacturing Services. Initially Vigilant will focus solely on its LED lighting business which includes the production of drivers, LED PCB’s and luminaires primarily for the U.S. and European markets. In the future the company will also evaluate other opportunities such as packaging chip leds and developing chip-on-board applications and offering manufacturing solutions to other industries.

Consolidating the activities in a separate company allows Vigilant to better provide the tailor-made solutions traditional lighting companies need as the market rapidly evolves towards solid state lighting applications. “With conventional lighting, luminaire design and quality were the principle value drivers”, says Joep de Vries, LED Business Unit Manager: “Nobody blamed the manufacturer if an incandescent lamp broke”.

With LED applications, however, the light source itself has become an intricate part of the luminaire and its reliability directly affects brand value. Moreover, due to the electronic nature of LED’s and drivers, lighting companies rely on third parties to supply the light source and have little control over their quality.

With its strength in electronics manufacturing, capabilities in aluminum and plastic parts production and expertise in lighting, Vigilant seeks to bridge the gap this technological development has created. Its products and services include OEM/ODM, design, sourcing electronic manufacturing, metal working and plastics and assembly and test.
